I personally think a good post-Fresher's thing to do would be demo games, much like last year - only hopefully with a greater degree of success. I'll keep a tally below of who's willing to run what in the weeks following Fresher's Fair - any newb-friendly GMs willing to run simple and not-too-obscure systems would be very much appreciated. (...) Finally, there's the question of a logo and flyers. We've existed for three years now, but still lack any defining symbol beyond a D20 to put on things like leaflets and our banner. If any prolific artists among us have ideas for a logo, please let me, Terry or Owen know; or post it below. Well, I for one got the feeling that there was nothing going on throughout the year... Yes, I know - some people actually have exams and stuff. But, don't mind me saying so, I kind of missed the bi-monthly spirit... And, being Bower Ashton based, I felt kind of adrift... But anyways:

Hi there you guys, I've just finished one logo for the society. Hope you like it: red version: composite version: I think this font might not be readable on a smaller scale, though: Well, that's it! Give me some feedback!

I'll probably do a d20 modern or cortex game for the demo's maybe both.
we should be near animé and wargaming as I put that on our freshers fair form.

Jackjaques, that's a decent logo knockup - I'll respond in full later when I'm at home, so I can use photoshop to indicate my suggestions. But so far, I am impressed. I know we've said this every year, but we're going to try to make social events a more regular thing. The difficulty is, by our very nature our society is fractured - people meet up to organise games, and then play in their own segmented groups at their own houses on their own time-frames. Unlike Anime or Wargaming or any of the sport societies, we have no inherent activity that can be done regularly as a large group. We tried boardgames evenings last year, but on the whole they weren't hugely successful - I think a lot of members didn't think it was worth their time to come out specially for a night of, well, boardgames. I will admit, I am stumped for ideas for regular socials. If anyone has any ideas, please post them here. Terry, you're the president - your thoughts on the logo ideas so far? ~Alex

The logo looks really good, great job! The use of the UWE logo in it was a nice touch! My only thought would be, and please don't take this as a criticism, is that while to us we can see thats a Dwarf Barbarian, I'm not sure if most people would make the connection. Besides the soc name theres nothing RP identifying about it. Tbh my first thought would be that it would be a sports time logo, or something Viking related. Like I said, not intended as a criticism, it was really well done, I'd just vote for something more instantly recognisable as being RP/Fantasy related.

An idea occurs that could remedy that - if you maybe tried adding some stylised flames to the sword, that'd mark it as distinctly fantasy. Also, if you were to move the "RPGS" text to the dwarf's belt, you could have the letters taller and thus more visible. Just my tuppence-worth.

But the sword is part of the uwe logo. Flames would break that.

Sorry guys, I don't know why but it seems the url to the pics got broken this last week. Anyway, as to your comments: @ vaxsgbstpachibgdk3 - I must say I wasn't that comfortable with the idea of using a dwarf-like character for the logo. But the use of UWE logo was calling me to try and do this. Now, I really have to say that I don't agree with you when you talk about "connection" - and I think it has to do with the idea one has of roleplaying games. For me it isn't just about medieval-fantasy. It is about vampires, sci-fi, terror... you name it! But a logo, it has to be something simple - so you whether go for a dice (usually the d20 trope) or you pick one of the genres. And here I'll say, any genre will do - as long you put RPG in bold letters. Of course, and here I guess you're right, the more obscure you get with, the less people will get it. But a charging dwarf...? A different subject is the lettering: I used "RPGS" with the meaning Role Playing Games Society - even that I know it should be just RPS, or RPSoc - but, again, if I was a roleplayer and a newcomer to the UWE grounds, and I saw anything with RPG on top, I would be very curious. The other options... wouldn't ring that strong a bell, I'm afraid. Still, I'm not the one to decide on this. @ <imaginative username here> - I think generic dragon covered the magic fire bit. But about the letters, I thing they would loose readability inside an already filled figure. I think I have to try and make the letters taller and thinner - that way even in a smaller version you'll be able to read them. Anyway, I'm not saying this one have to be our society logo. I'm just saying that I had great fun coming up with the idea of using the UWE logo and great fun in doing it. And if you do want to use it - that's fine by me!

I might be willing to roll a one shot adventure with whoever comes up. The format I'm thinking of will even allow for people to joing in in the middle of it...!

Hi guys,
Just to let you know that I will be working as a Student Ambassator tomorrow on the post-graduate reception here at Bower Ashton, so I won't be able to go to Frenchay.
I would be able to squeeze in some time in the morning, but it would take me 2 hours in a bus, so...
Still, I would like to know that/if you have something planned for tomorrow and I'm sad I can't be there to give a hand (and meet some of you personally).
Well, all I can say is that I'm looking forward those regular meetings. (Will they be weekly, bi-weekly, monthly, bi-monthly? Anyone...?)
Cheers
