I listen to the message come through the intercom and mentally check off all the personnel to be part of the mission. The list is as expected, until the name Lucia Rei is added to the end. Brilliant. Protecting a civilian observer is bound to make this mission all the more tricky, but if the Commander wants her along then she’s coming along. With the precision and efficiency taught me by my father, I quickly manage to assemble all the gear I will need for the upcoming mission. With a just under an hour left to spare I make my way to launch deck to await the arrival of my fellow soldiers. As they arrive I engage them in conversation, gauging their mental states and encouraging them for the mission ahead.
(using some knowledge behavioural sciences to gauge their mental states and some diplomacy to encourage them and increase their loyalty to me)

Intercom: "USS Cressida, this is your Commander speaking. The following personnel has 4 hours to prepare for the recon mission: Captain Laycock; Lieutenant Marshall; Professor Hemmingway..........
I blank the rest out as I go back to finishing the chapter I am reading. About ten minutes later I mark the page I got up to and put the book down.
"Guess I better get changed then..." I mutter to myself.
I go take a shower, have a shave then get dressed in one of my finer tweed suits; in order to make myself presentable for a change.
With the remaining time I gather together any bits and bobs I think I may need and go about researching anything possible regarding the system we are in and the colonization efforts (progess and status?) to see if there is anything interesting.
(Can I use the remaining 3 hours (ish) to use my Research skill for the above mentioned criteria?)

After checking over the engines I head off to collect the tools I will need on the recon mission. After getting everything I need I will finish my rounds and head to the launch deck.
When I get there I will start talking to Mr Marshall about the mission.
John (To Leon S. Marshall): Sir, do you have any idea what our jobs will be on this mission.

"As of the moment, no. I have yet to be briefed by the Commander as he wishes to brief all of us at the same time. But whatever your specific job is, I'm sure you will perform it admirably Mr Tool. The Commander chose you personally after all."
(Do you have an official rank? You weren't referred to by one in the message.)

Lying in my bunk the intercom wakes me up, The hypersleep was so mentally exhausting I needed to catch up before we had to do any proper work. After almost falling asleep again I hear my name called. "Private Medina. As Auxiliary: Lance Corporal Fawkes; Private Stude;" I'm still not used to hearing my name with a rank, it takes me a moment to notice as I slowly wake up. Guess I won't be getting any more sleep. I pull on my uniform and go over my equipment, much the same as most other soldiers except for some of the usual items, namely ammunition being replaced by more specialized equipment. Most of them explosives related, I head down to the mess, assault vest in tow (Something like this: ). After collecting food I plonk myself down at a table and dig in. Never go to war on an empty stomach. (Will I be able to use skills (craft electrical and chemical) to prepare some explosives for the mission?)

(This is just going to be a quick reply because yesterday I had a really looong day.)Answering your questions: Sorry about all that! The thing is I kind of decided to run for a seat at the UWESU and yesterday I had to be at Frenchay the all afternoon for a photo session and a looong (believe me) briefing. Just for the record, if you use facebook, you might want to have a look on my Campaign Page here. And, if you like what you read there, please let your friends know about it...! (Sorry if this feels like I'm spamming you or something like that...)

There you were, all in formation, as if writing an "L" in front on the dropship. With their back turned to the ship were all of the four teams of marines, alongside with Lance Corporal Fawkes and Private Stude. With their left to the ship were all the officers, scientific personnel and observers, in order: Captain Laycock, Lieutenant 1st-class Marshal, Lieutenant 2nd-class Hemmingway, Lieutenant 2nd-class "Tool", Doctor Morgan and Lucia Rei, observer. At your head was Master-Sargent Powell, trying to maintain respect until the arrival of the Commander-in-Chief. Five minutes past and he arrives, saluted with an: "aTEN-TION!", followed by two others, both standing to his left while he started talking: Commander: At ease. —he started— We have new intel about the source of the signal which might as well be genuine. Not a CSC ruse as first thought. —he pauses— The signal comes from a small planetoid with nominal atmosphere referenced as LV-237. Its code name will be Elvis. —another pause— Mother gave us a window of one-twenty hours before resuming the third jump, which means that you must return within seventy two hours, for all procedures to be as expected. You will have our best pilots for the task. Lieutenant Graham and Tech-Sargent Isamu. —gesturing to the two at his left— Again, this is a get in/get out situation. I don't want no trigger happy stunts. Keep those in your pants until you all get back and we get to Crestus Prime! <sigh> God speed. Master-Sargent: Staaand... EASY! All the marines: HOO-AH! And he retires. Lieutenant Graham: (Getting closer to both Master-Sargent and Captain Laycock.) We'll leave in 15 minutes. Gather your man.
What about you guys, anything you want to say/ask before the dropship leaves the safety of the USS Cressida?

I will start go over to the groups of Marines and start small talk about where they've seen action, what experience they have etc. Joke about the non-corps people with us, you know, get friendly and on their side sorta thing.

I find a place to sit, close to the ship. I then proceed to take a book and thermal mug out of my bag.
I start to "read", but in fact I am watching everyone else assigned to this mission for anything that may be useful to me/the mission.
(If needs-be I will use Knowledge: Behavioral Sciences on the NPC's/PC's to "get to know them" for want of a better word. Mainly it's my characters way to get an insight into other people... because being sociable isn't my thing.)

After looking over everyone quickly I move further over to one side and check through my equipment again, the 7P's have always applied and always will apply so you can never be to careful, especially when dealing with objects and substances capable of causing mass devastation to anything or one within a moments notice. I haven't had any major accidents since when I first started in school and I don't intend to have any more.

I continue as before, going round encouraging any men I missed earlier and any later arrivals, also giving special praise to any of them who I found before the Commander's briefing to be nervous or otherwise not totally prepared mentally.
(Just some more knowledge: behavioral sciences and diplomacy on the members of the team like I was doing earlier)

Fifteen minutes passed in a blink of an eye. But some of you still had time to be ignored by the marines (Dr. Morgan), only to be rescued by (what most humans would describe as a boring) conversation with the technical engineer ( Tool). Some had still time to check on their gear (Fawkes), while others had time to check on some messages from their superiors (Lei). Some were left out in a corner observing (Professor Hemmingway), while others would walk among the crew and be received with a smile (Lieutenant Marshall) — only to reach the same conclusion: some of the marines were more calm than they should be in the beginning of such an unexpected mission. * * * The UD-4L Cheyenne was incredible spacious for just a dropship. With room even for a light tank - more specifically a M577 APC (Armored Personnel Carrier). But the most impressive thing — Lieutenant Graham insisted — was the armament included in the ship: 32 M451 rockets, 88 SGW rockets (2 Mk.), 10 Zeus rockets (8 Mk.), six AGM-220C Hellhound missiles, 2 AIM'90E Headlock missiles, and 2 AGM'204A TSAMs. Not long ago you had seen Goliath shrink on the screen, now it was time to see the USS Cressida get smaller and smaller. Tech-Sargent Isamu talks on the speaker: We still have a sixteen hours trip to arrive at Elvis. So seat down and enjoy your trip. — to what Lieutenant Graham added: Sixteen hours to go but eighteen hours to come, because of the planetoid's pull. The USS Cressida add left you all on the rim of this system and you had to approach the small planetoid on board of the dropship. After a while you could already distinguish some celestial bodies surrounding a blue star. That's a cold star! — Lieutenant Graham explained — and that's the reason why the planetoid is only at 0.93 AU* away from the star. * * * Ten hours after you left the security of the USS Cressida a new phase was about to start: the drop. You could already see the couple of natural satellites that revolved around Elvis, but that was still one hour away — first there was an asteroid belt to cross... (Again, sorry about the hiatus you guys! I hope these 9 hours passed fast enough for you to still be interested in the game! Please, ask me whatever you want about anything game related before I continue...!)
* AU = Astronomic Unity. Which is the average distance between the Earth and the Sun (maximum of 1.017 AU and a minimum of 0.9833 AU). In the year of 2082 scientist confirmed that terraformation would be viable between 0.89 and 1.11 AU.

As you begin the approximation you can see several asteroids up to three times the size of the Cheyenne, but Lieutenant Graham is a veteran pilot and he can maneuver around them with ease. Still, Tech-Sargent Isamu suddenly talks on the speakers: The sensor is on to something. Captain Laycock, please come to the cockpit! — and, after a short pause — To all personnel: until further notice... steady yourselves! We might have a bump in a minute or two! * * * At the cockpit: Lieutenant Graham: We might have loosen up some dust from one of the big rocks and we're now on a area where evasive maneuver will be the death of us, Captain. Captain Laycock: What's the size of it? Tech-Sargent: About 6cm of diameter, sir. And it's gaining speed on us. * * * Again, on the speakers: This is your Captain speaking. Please hold yourselves steady. We might be rammed by a micro-asteroid in the next minutes. We're surrounded by smaller asteroids than those we've already passed so we can't do evasive maneuvering. Just hold yourselves steady! * * * And, effectively, after a few minutes the alarm sounds: Danger: impact iminent. Some of you try to grab something heavy. Danger: impact iminent. Some of you try to squeeze into tiny spaces. Danger: impact iminent. Some of you try to get away from sharp edges. Danger: impact iminent. Some of you get it on with a smile. Danger: impact iminent. And then it comes... TRAKADOOM!
To save you from the impact damage you might choose 1 of the following checks (for me to throw in your behalf), whichever you feel most appropriate for your character: - Balance check
- Craft (structural) check
- Fortitude save
- Reflex save
- Strength check (or Extreme Effort talent)
So, please reply me with your choice and with any question that you might have.
