Found it! The necromancer class (or other class with the spell Death Bond) allows him to bind a Death Knight to his will at level five (spell level three). This is done by offering a newborn child to a deity of great evil. The child will then begin training as soon as it can stand. The Death Knight is NOT undead (until level 20) but gains undead traits as it progresses through the class levels. What is important to note is that the Death Knight is not the creation of the necromancer but a gift from an evil God. The bond between them immediately breaks and the Death Knight turns against the necromancer should he betray the God or kill one of his servants. There we have it, Death Knights are first servant of their deities and only second to necromancers.

The book "Secret College of Necromancy" also mentions that they are rather in a symbiotic relationship where the Death Knight supplies fresh corpses in return for magic armor and weapons.

Yeah, so it's pretty much official - I'm heading back to nottingham in the next month. A lot of shit happened over the past few weeks and plans changed, as originally I just assumed I would be staying in bristol.
I feel guilty it turned out like this, but I guess it happens. It's a shame really, as I spent a fair amount of time with this and liked where it was going. It's not just this either - it means I have to stop playing Tigran and Peytr too, which sucks beyond measure. You don't just 'find' a quality game to go into when you move into a new area either.
Bah.
